Inspiring Young Women to Become the Mathematical Leaders of Tomorrow

MEOW is a two-week summer camp focused on advanced mathematics, designed for rising 6th to 9th graders. The camp will run three days a week for seven hours per day (9AM to 4PM) at the Bethesda Chevy-Chase Service Center, with each session divided into a learning phase and a project phase. Participants will explore cryptography, fractals, and graph theory, gaining both theoretical understanding and hands-on experience.

Throughout the camp, students will work in three groups: Fractals, Graph Theory, and Cryptography. Each group is tasked with a different project to accomplish an overarching goal: let three friends (Amber, Megan, and Paige) enjoy their time at the Dragon Curve Amusement Park. The Graph Theory group will learn all about introductory graph theory, with a final project on optimizing the trio's schedule. The Cryptography group will apply modular arithmetic, ciphers, and prime factorization to decrypt messages and uncover clues to help protect the amusement park from bandits. Finally, the Fractal Art Group will focus on creating intricate fractal designs, using self-similarity and recursion to design the amusement park rides and attractions. All students will also create presentations on what they have learned throughout the camp.

On the final day, all groups will come together for the MEOW symposium, where students present their work to an open audience. This camp provides an engaging and collaborative environment for young math enthusiasts to develop problem-solving skills, think critically, and explore mathematics beyond the standard curriculum—all while unraveling an immersive, interactive math adventure.
